Colour on colour

Tips

Simply put, this is using the same colour for your background as for your COI. There are endless examples of this around, e.g. a light green new leaf against the darker green older leaves, this will make the light green stand out and be your COI. Look at the different shades of a colour from very light to very dark that you can use. Look at the cold colours you can use together with their various tones,  or the opposite, use the tones of your hot colours together. Try to make one of your colours the focus of the image and the other tones to enhance the overall image. Subtle shades of colour can affect our mood and perception of a scene.  Nature abounds in examples of colour on colour, if you can’t find any set up your own with objects of various tones. What about a person in a blue frock against the blue sky or sitting in a blue chair. If you put your thinking cap on you will come up with all kinds of interesting shots. A good idea is to study the colour wheel and refresh your memories on how colours work together.
